Job opportunities

Two funded PhD positions

Applications are invited for two fully-funded, 4-year PhD positions at the University of Galway. The successful candidates will work with Angela Carnevale and Tobias Rossmann on the project “Machine learning and explicit computations of zeta functions in algebra”.

Both PhD projects will revolve around computational and theoretical topics surrounding enumerative problems in algebra and combinatorics. A key theme will be to predict and prove properties of polynomials and zeta functions associated with graphs and hypergraphs.

We are looking for candidates with an interest in algebra, combinatorics, and/or computations. No prior knowledge of machine learning or zeta functions is required.

The successful candidates will enrol in 4-year structured PhD programmes at the University of Galway. The annual (tax-free) stipend for each position is €22,000. Each position comes with funding to attend relevant research events and conferences. The successful applicants will have the opportunity to carry out (paid) teaching (tutorials, marking) within the School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Galway.

For more information, please contact Angela Carnevale (angela.carnevale@universityofgalway.ie) and Tobias Rossmann (tobias.rossmann@universityofgalway.ie).

How to apply

To apply, please send an email including a cover letter, CV, and contact details of two academic referees to Angela Carnevale (angela.carnevale@universityofgalway.ie) and Tobias Rossmann (tobias.rossmann@universityofgalway.ie).

Please apply by 21 June 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until both positions are filled.
